Overview
The Cooke 18-100mm Varotal T3 is a classic Cooke zoom lensed released in 1987. It’s a legendary industry standard zoom lenses. The 18-100mm offers flexibility with an amazing close focus of 2′ 4″, making it very versatile for narrative, table top, and portrait work. The lens is designed for Super 35 sensor a sensor size and with the use of an expander can be used with full frame cameras (though you would lose two stops). With a solid build and ergonomic design, it’s organic and sharp without feeling harsh while naturally emphasizing skin tones.
This lens makes fantastic images, and there’s a reason half the films of the 20th and 21st centuries have been shot with Cooke lenses. Also worth noting, the 18-100 pairs really well with the popular vintage Cooke Speed Panchros, having similar color and contrast.
Legendary, Acadamy Award wining DOP, Roger Deakins is said to be a fan of this lens and is quoted as saying “I would judge the Cooke 18 – 100mm as one of the very best zoom lenses. When I carry a zoom, which admittedly is not that often, it is usually this lens.”
