Useful Information

The Canon EOS C300 EF Digital Cinema Camera is a large sensor camcorder suitable for many genres as it qualifies for unconditional broadcast quality, recording 50Mb/s onto CF cards 4:2:2.

The EOS C300 comes with an EF mount. Lens adapters from other manufacturers permit various types of prime and zoom lenses to be fitted.

The EOS C300 EF is Canon’s first digital cinema camcorder and was developed from the 5D Mark II following the success of its surprisingly good 1080p video mode. Whilst this full HD camcorder has the form factor of a supersized DSLR, the Canon EOS C300 EF is designed for digital cinematography.

The Canon EOS C300 EF’s Super35 CMOS sensor has an active image size of 24.6 x 13.8mm and uses a readout technique that delivers full bandwidth RGB video components without the need for any debayering algorithms. The camera offers shallow depth of field, high sensitivity/low noise and high signal to noise ratio. The C300 EF is also particularly good in high ISO/low light situation.

Rather than the moire-pattern inducing line skipping method employed in the 5D Mark II, the Canon EOS C300 EF uses a far more video-friendly down-sampling method whereby a group of 4 pixels are sampled and then mapped to each final output pixel.

The C300 EF has been designed to be as versatile as possible with comfort and usability in mind. Different components can be added or removed as needed. The EOS C300 EF is compatible with industry standard, third party accessories so it can be easily rigged for studio, Steadicam, jib or just about any other configuration.

The Canon EOS C300 EF’s compact and light body weighs approximately 1430g. It’s rugged and durable design withstands rough, professional use and is dust and splash proof. Start/stop buttons are positioned in four different locations to suit different shooting styles. Large dials can be found in two places allowing operation from the side. The EOS C300 EF viewfinder tilts up to 60 degrees and the removable, rotating hand grip turns 360 degrees in 15 degree increments. The multiple angle control panel rotates 270 degrees to accommodate shoulder, side and low angle camera positions.

Whilst the Canon EOS C300 EF is based on a 5D, it’s designed to be cinematographer friendly. The button layout is based on commonly used features and some control buttons are assignable. The lock switch prevents accidental control changes while recording. There is a tally lamp which is visible from side or behind camera. The C300 EF offers wireless remote control of key camera functions including focus, shutter speed, white balance and iris (when using supported Canon EF lenses) via laptops and tablets.

The Canon EOS C300 EF records to CF cards and offers simultaneous recording to dual CF card and HD-SDI out to external recorders or monitoring systems.

The Canon EOS C300 EF has GenLock, HD/SD-SDI/ Timecode and XLR terminals.
